Victory 100 & 106 Oil Change: What's In the Kit, How Much Oil It Takes, and How To Do It

Your Victory's Freedom V-twin shares its oil with the transmission and a wet clutch. That's the reason an oil change on a Victory isn't a place to grab whatever jug is on sale at the auto parts store. Instead, Victory packaged everything you need into a single part number, and the job takes about an hour in the driveway.

Here's what's in the kit, how much oil your bike actually holds, which filter it uses, and the step-by-step.

What oil is in the Victory oil change kit?

The kit contains Victory Semi-Synthetic 20W-40 motor oil, 4 one-quart bottles plus one 16 oz bottle, for 4.5 quarts total.

Two things make this oil worth using instead of a generic 20W-40:

• It's clutch-safe. Victory engines run a wet clutch bathed in engine oil. The 20W-40 formula is built without the friction modifiers found in automotive oils, which is what prevents clutch slippage and keeps engagement smooth.
• It's transmission-rated. The same oil lubricates the gearbox, so it has to hold up to gear shear. Victory's blend maintains its viscosity grade under shear testing and meets API SM.

It also passes current emissions requirements and won't harm your catalytic converter — relevant on any of the fuel-injected Freedom engines.

How much oil does a Victory 100 or 106 cubic inch engine take?

About 4.5 quarts for a standard oil and filter change.

Here's the part that trips people up: the engine is filled with roughly 5 quarts from the factory, but you'll only get about 4.5 quarts back out during a normal service. The remaining half-quart stays behind in the oil cooler, the lines, and coating the internals.

Quick tip for first timers, add most of the oil, then bring the level up to the mark on the dipstick rather than dumping the whole kit in blind. Check the level with the bike upright and level on the ground, not on the side stand. And with the engine at operating temperature, following the procedure in your owner's manual.

What oil filter does a Victory 100 or 106 use?

The kit includes one genuine Polaris oil filter, PN 2540086 — the 10-micron spin-on filter used across the Victory 100 and 106 cubic inch engines.

You also get two drain plug sealing washers, so the crush washers get replaced instead of reused. Reusing a flattened copper washer is one of the most common causes of a weeping drain plug after a DIY oil change.

How often should you change the oil on a Victory?

Every 8,000 km, per the Polaris lubrication specification, or once a season, whichever comes first.

That "whichever comes first" matters more in Alberta than it does most places. A lot of Victory riders here put on 3,000 or 4,000 km in a short riding season, which means the bike goes into winter storage well short of the interval. Oil still degrades sitting in a crankcase with fuel or debris and moisture in it. Changing before storage means the engine spends five or six months full of clean oil instead of acidic used oil.

Short trips, heavy two-up loads, and stop-and-go city riding all push you toward the shorter end of the interval.

What tools do you need?

The kit covers the consumables. You'll need to supply:

• Oil drain pan (5 quart minimum)
• Oil filter wrench
• Torque wrench
• 6mm Allen wrench for the drain plug on 2003-and-newer bikes (1999–2001 used a 14mm Allen; 2002 used a 3/8" square drive)
• Funnel
• Shop rags and a pair of nitrile gloves

Confirm the drain plug fastener for your specific year and model before you start — nothing kills momentum like discovering you're one Allen key short with the oil already warm.

How do you change the oil on a Victory 100 or 106?

1. Warm the engine. Run the bike for five to ten minutes, or take a short ride. Warm oil carries suspended contaminants out with it instead of leaving them in the sump. Then shut it down and let it sit a few minutes — hot oil and exhaust pipes will burn you.
2. Get the bike level. Upright on a lift or a stand, not leaned on the sidestand. This matters for both draining fully and reading the dipstick correctly afterward.
3. Position the drain pan and pull the drain plug. Loosen it with the correct Allen key, then back it out by hand. Let it drain fully — give it a good ten minutes rather than rushing it.
4. Remove the oil filter. Position the pan underneath first; the filter holds oil and it will run down the engine case. Use the filter wrench to break it loose, then spin it off by hand.
5. Install the new filter. Wipe the mounting surface clean. Add a touch of fresh oil on the new filter's rubber gasket, then thread it on by hand until the gasket contacts the base and tighten hand tight.
6. Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer. Use the fresh sealing washer from the kit, not the old one, and torque to the value in your service manual. Be careful not to over-tighten. Since it is an aluminum case, over torquing isn’t difficult to do.
7. Fill with fresh oil. Add roughly 4 quarts through the fill, then let it settle for a couple of minutes.
8. Check, run, re-check. Verify the level on the dipstick, start the engine and let it idle a minute to fill the filter and cooler, then shut it off, wait, and re-check. Top up to the mark with the remaining oil from the kit. Look underneath for drips at the plug and filter.
9. Reset the service reminder if your model has one, and log the date and odometer reading.

What do you do with the used oil?

Used motor oil, filters, and empty containers are all accepted free of charge at eco stations and most municipal recycling depots across Alberta.
